About the Museum

Established in 1962, the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum is dedicated to celebrating the life and achievements of the aviation pioneer. It is located in Hammondsport and houses a vast collection of early aircraft originals, reproductions, bicycles, motorcycles, and local memorabilia. It offers an intriguing glimpse into past inventions local to Hammondsport. It hosts original and restored aircraft like the 1917 Standard “J-1” to bicycles, motorcycles, and vintage cars.

Each exhibit shares a slice of history, from the early days of flight training to the impact of aviation on the local community. Thoughtfully arranged to engage visitors of all ages, it’s an excellent spot for anyone looking to learn more about the local history while exploring the area.

Who was Glenn Curtiss?

Glenn H. Curtiss, known as the “Father of Naval Aviation,” was a significant figure in the early 20th century. He began with bicycles, moved on to motorcycles with his renowned light weight engine designs that lead him to significant innovations in early powered aircraft design. He moved onto flying boats that lead to major contributions to the U.S. Navy, all or which are well-documented and celebrated within the museum’s walls.

Exhibits on Display

The museum offers several exhibits, all lending to the different industries Curtiss impacted. The Aircraft Collection features original and restored pieces like the 1927 Curtiss “Robin” and the 1917 Curtiss JN-4D “Jenny,” with some unique items on loan. Besides aviation, there’s an Automobile Collection showcasing a range of vintage cars and a Motorcycle Collection with models dating back to 1904. Each exhibit, whether it’s a rare bicycle from 1865,  or a meticulously reproduced 1907 Curtiss 8 Cylinder motorcycle, invites visitors to explore the evolution of transportation and the enduring legacy of Glenn H.
