Top 3 Reasons to Spend Memorial Day Weekend in the Finger Lakes
The Finger Lakes Are the Birthplace of Memorial Day
Although it has been debated over where the origin of Memorial Day took place, in 1966, former President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo, New York, the official “birthplace” of the holiday.
When General John B. Murray, a Civil War hero, developed a committee to devote the day to honor the fallen heroes in 1865, shortly after the Civil War, women all over met to create wreaths, crosses, and bouquets for each veteran’s grave. Today, we continue to remember our fallen heroes with these same traditions. So, what better place to gather with your friends and family and celebrate our national heroes while enjoying the rich history of the Finger Lakes.
Keuka Lake Has Everything You Need to Celebrate Memorial Day
What’s better than having a leisurely day at the lake with your family? Cruise around the lake on a rental boat, jet ski, kayak, or bike around the perimeter of Keuka Lake! If you’d rather take a chauffeured tour around the lake, check out the “Pat II” presented by the Finger Lakes Boating Museum. Or check out OnKeuka for a custom tour. After a day on the lake, grab a bite to eat and a local brew from Steuben Brewing and continue enjoying the stunning views of Keuka Lake.
If you feel like venturing out to the north end of Keuka Lake, you’ll have 621 acres to explore at Keuka Lake State Park! Pack a picnic and enjoy fishing and swimming along 60 miles of shoreline. You’ll enjoy shimmering water views against a clear blue sky and lush vineyard-covered slopes.
