Although it has been debated over where the origin of Memorial Day took place, in 1966, former President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo, New York, the official “birthplace” of the holiday.
When General John B. Murray, a Civil War hero, developed a committee to devote the day to honor the fallen heroes in 1865, shortly after the Civil War, women all over met to create wreaths, crosses, and bouquets for each veteran’s grave. Today, we continue to remember our fallen heroes with these same traditions. So, what better place to gather with your friends and family and celebrate our national heroes while enjoying the rich history of the Finger Lakes.
